Challawa Gorge damChallawa Gorge dam

Preventive erosion control measures at the Challawa Gorge dam are badly needed. The Challawa Gorge dam was constructed several years after the Tiga dam, and yet still too late to learn one of the lessons from the older and larger Tiga dam, that it is important to stabilize the soil in the immediate catchments of the dam so as to control premature siltation of the reservoir. A lot of the silt is also being deposited in the Challawa River, immediately downstream of the dam, having negative effects on the intake structures of Kano City Water Supply.

JWL is supporting the operators of the dam, Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, and other basin level stakeholders to persuade the Federal Government to carry out such a control measure in Challawa Gorge dam to stabilise the situation.
