Kafin Hausa RiverKafin Hausa River

The Kafin Hausa river is severely silted up for about 15 km downstream from its bifurcation with the Hadejia river. This is mainly due to sand and silt deposition which itself is a result of excessive erosion in other sections of the river upstream of the bifurcation. The consequences of this have been lack of adequate flow of water in the river during the dry seasons and for much of the rainy season, particularly for downstream farming and fishing activities, and excessive flooding at the upstream bifurcation, affecting nearby towns & villages.

For the past 10 or more years, communities have been coming together to undertake manual channel clearance work while governments have assisted in the construction of temporary embankments around the affected towns to curtail flooding. These efforts are mainly rudimentary, temporary and hardly effective for more than a year.

JWL is helping these communities to find a lasting solution to this problem, through mechanical channel clearance of the severely silted stretches, and construction of embankments in sections where the riverbanks are low, to protect settlements and farmlands from the threat of flooding.
