Tiga dam
The outlets of the Tiga dam as well as its overall storage capacity are limited. There are serious doubts as to whether the outlets of this dam can provide bulk releases within a limited time frame should the need arise. A similar fear in respect of dissipating flood inflows had forced the dam administrators to lower the level of the spillway by about 2.5m, effectively reducing the storage capacity of the dam by 30%.
This reduced storage will in time become a major problem if a new basin-wide water sharing plan comes into effect. This is because the additional demand that will result from the needs of previously deprived demand centres, as well as that resulting from the possible expansion of the Kano River and Hadejia Valley Irrigation Projects (KRIP & HVIP), will further stretch the supply provided by the Tiga and Challawa Gorge dams.
JWL is supporting the operators of the dam, Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, and other basin level stakeholders to persuade the Federal Government to provide an additional outlet at Tiga. This will then make it safe to restore the spillway to its former level and the reservoir to its full storage.
